Remember that little thing called the COVID pandemic where you had to wear a mask on the regular and we invented new ways to greet each other when we saw them instead of shaking hands. You know what I'm talking about, but probably won't admit that you bumped elbows, gave the hang loose sign, or invented some other way to show respect to the people you met and greeted. If you're like me, you also probably still endure those awkward moments when you go in for a handshake and the receiving end comes in with a fist bump and you end up with the turkey. It's all so weird because nobody knows what to expect anymore. I've landed on the fist bump as my main mode of greeting people, but it's still pretty awkward deciding which way to go based on the setting I'm in. I just keep telling myself, "YOU GOT THIS" and keep plugging away.
It seems a little wonky that I am writing about fist bumps, but if you have made it this far into the blog, I feel like I have at least hooked you a little and so the likelihood that you will finish reading is pretty good. The message is pretty simple, but you have to believe it. We are coming up on a month of the new school year and things are still pretty fresh and new. We are still trying to learn names, we are still establishing our new routines, and we inevitably are getting annoyed at some particular things that we think should be going differently. It's okay because you aren't the only one. YOU GOT THIS!
We all need a little pep talk every now and then. The trouble is that you may not know who is going to give it to you. You feel down in the dumps and you wonder if you are doing anything right because as Tom Cruise states in A Few Good Men, "the hits just keep on coming." At this moment, you need to stop looking outward for the motivation to keep moving forward and look inward. You need to tell that little voice in your head that YOU GOT THIS.
It truly is the little things that matter. A smile, a kind word, or a fist bump can go a long way to make someone's day better. It works for all of us, but we need to embrace it and actually do it. We need to tell each other that a bad moment doesn't need to turn into a bad day, week, year, or lifetime. It is simply a moment in time that we can learn from and grow if we commit to it. When we all do this together, we create a movement of positivity that is infectious. We just need to continue to tell ourselves that YOU GOT THIS!
