For Christmas, my son received a Death Star model seen in the image above. The joy on his face when he opened it was priceless and we immediately set up some tables in the living room so he could organize the pieces and develop his process for putting it together. He showed so much gusto as he began pouring himself into the process and with each section he completed, I could sense the satisfaction he felt by his accomplishment. Unfortunately, this picture is a couple of weeks old and it still looks like this today. The process and progress has stalled and I am really wanting to sit down and finish it because I don't like unfinished projects and every time I walk into the house, I am greeted with a warm reminder that my son does not share the same attitude on time frames as I do when it comes to getting a job done. I love him dearly and want to respect his process, but come on man!
We all have our own little quirks and idiosyncrasies that make us unique. We tend to look at our lives and work through a lens that is completely our own and wonder why other people don't see things the same way. In our minds, it is the only way to see things and when other people follow a process that is foreign to us, we don't understand and we sometimes get frustrated because we know there is a better way (our own) and if people would just listen, they would see our genius. But alas, the world doesn't work that way, so we all must modify and adjust to others and respect the fact that people have their own process that works for them and we just need to accept it whether we agree or disagree with it.
At the end of the day, we would all be wise to follow Taylor Swift's advice when she sings, "You need to calm down, you're being too loud." Whether or not someone does things the same way you do is not the point. The point is that we need to respect that everyone has a process of their own that they need to follow in order to get something done. They are more than likely aware of the deadline they have to hit, so why should it matter to you how they get there as long as it gets done? The fact of the matter is that we have a hidden desire to have some control over our crazy world and it bothers us that others can't see or do things the way that we do. When we make a choice to do this and calm down a little, we might just find ourselves a little happier in the process. For me, that means letting the Death Star get built by my son according to his process rather than going all Darth Vader on him.
