Winter is Coming

Let me guess. You saw the title of this blog and the first thing that came to mind was, "Dude! Winter is already here." You are correct and thank you for letting me know. I am presently looking out my home office window and see the snow on the ground and can feel the frigid temperature through the window, so I am acutely aware of which season we are in. Other's saw the title and wondered why I am writing about Game of Thrones in a blog mostly about education. Well, I'm not writing about that kind of winter though. The winter I am telling tales of is the month of February in the world of education. Oh yes, winter is definitely coming.

Most people don't like to talk about the month of February as it pertains to the world of education. In fact, there are some that shudder at me mentioning it because it has a whole Lord Voldemort and "He Who Must Not Be Named" sort of vibe to it. Well, I'm the type of person that just puts things out there because in the discomfort, there is growth. So, let's dive into to this little rabbit hole and see what we can discover.

What's wrong with February you ask? It's got everything going for it. It has Groundhog's Day, Valentine's Day, it's the shortest month of the year, it's when you start seeing a glimpse of the spring to come, and every four years it gets to claim Leap Year. That's a pretty impressive resume for a month, so what's the big deal? Why is winter coming? You see, in schools, February is the month when everything seems to merge together and the already full plate that teachers have gets even fuller with the advent of building the master schedule for next year. While teachers are struggling to keep their heads above water, February is the month that comes to submerge them underwater yet again in the hopes that they will scream "UNCLE" and give up. Fortunately, teachers are resilient, hard working, and built to overcome any issue that the month of February places in front of them. Winter is coming, but we'll be ready.

February masquerades as the month of joy, love, and celebration, but to be honest, it is the epitome of anxiety and stress. For once, I would like the month of February to live up to its name sake and provide some love to all of the hard working teachers who work tirelessly to help our kids. I want the month to provide some solace to the adults in schools who show up to work when it is dark, go home when it is dark, and sometimes feel like they are left out in the dark when it comes to the endless amount of "stuff" that keeps on coming their way. I want the month of February to care for those in schools in the form of nice weather, friendly faces, and an understanding that they are doing the best that they can.

Being a teacher sucks sometimes and February just happens to be the month where this is heightened. It is a month of the year that holds so much potential if it would just allow people to enjoy it for the short month that it is and grant people peace and serenity to make it through to Spring Break. A guy can dream, right?

Winter is coming, but I am ready with my snowblower and shovel to help dig out from the impending storm.
